A theoretical investigation is reported of the suppression of noise wa
ves in a thin-layer mutual conjugator. The methods of matrix and wave
optics are used t show that displacement of thin layers from the plane
s of exact conjugation in the direction towards a lens results in mutu
al phase conjugation of Gaussian beams when the self-oscillation thres
hold is exceeded slightly.
