A six-month prospective study was carried out at the La Rabta Maternit
y Hospital in Tunis in 211 neonates with intrauterine growth retardati
on (IUGR) who represented 3.45% of all live births and 38.4% of low bi
rth-weight infants. Among the many, often interrelated causes of IUGR,
the most common was vascular disease (hypertension, diabetes mellitus
, toxemia), followed by maternal malnutrition, genetic diseases, and c
hronic maternal diseases (nephropathies, connective tissue diseases, s
ickle cell anemia...). TORCH was infrequent. No cause of IUGR was dete
cted in 28% of cases.
