We present a case of a brain stem dermoid in a 20-month-old child pres enting as a progressive space-occupying lesion and review the literatu re concerning the diagnosis and management of brain stem tumours in ch ildren, emphasising the importance of preoperative imaging investigati ons and direct surgical attack on lesions which are ''focal'' in natur e.
