The thermal decomposition of hydrogen sulfide to produce hydrogen and
sulfur was investigated in palladium and ceramic membrane reactors usi
ng isothermal, one-dimensional models. The characteristic features of
the reactors were evaluated in terms of dimensionless parameters relat
ing the reaction coefficients, reactor geometry, membrane properties a
nd operating conditions. The analysis of the results provided guidelin
es to define the system boundaries, fix the design parameters and iden
tify the areas of further developments.
