Storage of olive fruits at 4 degrees C resulted in a progressive decre
ase in the germination capacity of in vitro cultured excised embryos.
To prevent this viability loss during storage a cryopreservation proce
dure was developed for isolated embryos. High germination percentages
(70%) were obtained after rapid immersion of desiccated embryos (3-10%
moisture content) in liquid nitrogen. Morphologically uniform plants
were regenerated from cryopreserved embryos.
