Abstract
In this all embracing review of the relationship between culture and t he sea, man's activities in ancient and modern times are the thread wo ven into the author's philosophy. Science, considered as part of man's culture, demands international and interdisciplinary cooperation toda y, if the many unsolved mysteries of the sea are to be brought to the surface.
