Neohypodiscus is erected to replace Hypodiscus Lloyd, a later homonym.
Neophypodiscus rickii, the type species, N. irradians, and N. cerebri
nus are accepted. Features of the genus include brown one- to three-ce
lled ascospores with hyaline polar caps and sometimes with a pore in o
ne end; asci with a distinct, but nonamyloid apical ring; and massive
stromata with a hard exterior layer and fibrous or woody interior. No
anamorph is known. The taxonomic position of Neohypodiscus is unsettle
d, but it is presently placed in the Amphisphaeriaceae senus lato.
