Abstract
The examination of hard coatings requires specified test methods to as sess the properties of the film and characterize the improvement of th e layered component. Information is given about existing measurement a nd testing methods, and the need for the definition and qualification of further specified tests and reference specimens for calibration pro cedures. Recent innovative research and development activities and int ernational standardization efforts are presented.
