Much has been written about successful case management programs for th
e severely mentally ill. Management approaches have not received as mu
ch attention, yet the success or failure of case management for severe
ly mentally ill populations is much less dependent on program structur
e than on implementation. Excellent care depends on an openness to cha
nge, a willingness to look at new information and to monitor continual
ly organizational and individual performance, and dedication to an ide
a. Success depends on management's choice and support of the staff, he
lping them take pleasure in the small steps that mean so much in the l
ives of those with severe mental disorders.
