Metallic, ceramic, and polymeric materials are applied in all discipli
nes of surgical and dental medicine. The biocompatibility is determine
d by the chemical composition, the mechanical and electronic structure
s of the material's surface, the properties of the interface to the sp
ecific body electrolyte as well as by reactions, which occur between t
he solid and the liquid phase. The development of biomaterials, consid
ering the sensitive biological environment, requires knowledge from al
l fields of the natural sciences and knowledge of manufacturing method
s derived from the key technologies.
