X. Ma et N. Kishor, ASSESSING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ATTITUDE TOWARD MATHEMATICS AND ACHIEVEMENT IN MATHEMATICS - A METAANALYSIS, Journal for research in mathematics education, 28(1), 1997, pp. 26-47
Little consensus exists in the research literature concerning the rela
tionship between attitude toward mathematics and achievement in mathem
atics. To assess the magnitude of this relationship, the researchers c
onducted a meta-analysis to integrate and summarize the findings from
113 primary studies. The statistical results of these studies were tra
nsformed into a common effect size measure, correlation coefficient. T
his relationship was found to be dependent on a number of variables: g
rade, ethnic background, sample selection, sample size, and date of pu
blication. Gender did not have a significant effect on the relationshi
p, nor were there any significant interactions among gender, grade, an
d ethnic background. The researchers discuss the findings in compariso
n to previous narrative reviews and meta-analyses, and draw implicatio
ns for practice and further research.
