In the study of cationic substitutions in the Mn8O10Cl3 multisite fram
ework, a new ytterbium oxychloride ''Yb1.5Mn6.25O10Cl3'' has been obta
ined by a redox reaction between MnO2, MnCl2 and YbCl3. It crystallize
s in cubic symmetry with a = 13.435(1) angstrom and the structure has
been solved in the space group F m3m (R = 0.029). This oxychloride is
lacunar, the C16 octahedron is only half-filled by Mn2+. Ytterbium ato
ms are located in two different sites, cubic YbO8 and octahedral YbO6.
