Abstract
A cosmological model is given that has good physical properties for th e early and late universe but is a hypersurface in a flat five-dimensi onal manifold. The big bang can therefore be regarded as an effect of a choice of coordinates in a truncated higher-dimensional geometry. Th us the big bang is in some sense a geometrical illusion.
