How have engineers in industry and research become aware of the need t
o move beyond the limits of their training and thus open up toward the
social sciences? What kind of formalized, well-argued know-how will f
uture engineers need? Two examples are cited in response: automation a
nd engineering. To understand the sociotechnical mix in the engineerin
g universe, a framework of interdisciplinary reflexion is proposed tha
t defines work so as to include the notions of responsibility and orga
nization.
