This panorama of the many sorts of studies on the relations between la
nguage and work draws attention to both a renewal of interest in old q
uestions and the development of new fields of inquiry. It is shown how
the problems related to what are considered to be the essential prope
rties of language crop up in studies of work. Language must be examine
d in order to understand work not just as a contextualized, cooperativ
e activity but also as a normative activity under constraints.
