Reaction of cyclooctyne (1) with commercially available lithium sand a
ffords the 1,4-dilithio-1,3-butadiene derivative 5 in 57% yield. Upon
treatment with sulphur dichloride the thiophene derivative 6 is formed
. When using methyl iodide as electrophile an interesting lithium iodi
ne exchange takes place to the vinyl iodide 7, which allows further fu
nctionalization of the 1,1'-bicyclooctenyl framework.
