M. Sono et al., FUNCTIONALIZATION INCLUDING FLUORINATION OF CAFFEINE, GUANOSINE TETRAACETATE, AND URIDINE TRIACETATE USING ELECTROCHEMICAL OXIDATION, Tetrahedron letters, 35(49), 1994, pp. 9237-9238
The title compounds have been subjected to electrochemical oxidation w
ith Et(3)N-3HF as an electrolyte. Caffeine afforded 8-fluorocaffeine a
s a sole product in 43% yield. Guanosine tetraacetate and uridine tria
cetate gave the fluorinated compounds in 7.3 and 4.8 % yield, respecti
vely. Similar electrochemical oxidation of caffeine with methanol, KCl
or KCN yielded 8-methoxycaffeine, 8-chloracaffeine, or 8-cyanocaffein
e, respectively.
