Abstract
Alkalilignin samples obtained from untreated paper-mill effluent and e ffluent decolorized by Streptomyces UAH 30 and Streptomyces UAH 51 wer e analyzed by pyrolysis/gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, The mole cular composition of the samples and the chemical modifications occurr ing in the lignin units were studied in order to know the mechanism of decolorization carried out by these microorganisms. The pyrolysis dat a showed a notable reduction in the lignin pyrolysis products of alkal ilignins in effluent decolorized by Streptomyces strains, Moreover, ch emical modifications, such as oxidation and shortening of the side cha in of the phenyl-propyl moieties of lignin were also detected.
