Animal diseases and their treatment are one of the most important cost
factors in cattle- and pig production. In milk production these are t
reatment costs and losses caused by clinical and subclinical mastitis
as well as economical losses caused by hoof diseases. In pig productio
n the total amount of veterinary costs as well as costs and benefits o
f vaccination programmes are investigated. The results of the calculat
ions show, that a high national economic benefit can be reached throug
h prevention measures such as vaccination programmes and early treatme
nt of diseases (hoof diseases) as well as calculated redevelopment str
ategies (mastitis).
