Kinetics of the potentiostatic growth-decomposition of oxygen coverage
(theta), corresponding changes in the interfacial potential (DELTA(CH
I)), and hysteresis of theta and DELTA(CHI) at the increase and decrea
se in the Pt-anode polarization in 1 M HCl at 1.1 < E < 2.4 V are stud
ied. Intensive and extensive components of DELTA(CHI) characterizing t
he injection and loss of electrons in the chemisorbed oxygen layers ar
e found as a function of the potential and the coverage. The functiona
l role of these components in altering the charge and the work of form
ation of the electrode-solution interface is considered.
