Dk. Routh, IMPACT OF POVERTY ON CHILDREN, YOUTH, AND FAMILIES - INTRODUCTION TO THE SPECIAL ISSUE, Journal of clinical child psychology, 23(4), 1994, pp. 346-348
Provides background for this special issue of the Journal of Clinical
Child Psychology on the ''impact of Poverty on Children, Youth, and Fa
milies,'' cosponsored by the Committee on Children, Youth, and Familie
s of the American Psychological Association. As anticipated, the major
ity of the articles present original research, including controlled in
terventions, along with two comprehensive and critical reviews of issu
es relevant to policy. In addition to considering the impact of povert
y itself (in the short and long term), the authors examine numerous co
rrelated factors, including prenatal methadone exposure, low birthweig
ht, other biological risks, racial and ethnic minority status, neighbo
rhood disadvantage, need for integrated medical and psychosocial servi
ces, supportive home environments, parental anger, and divorce.
