La. Styles et E. Vichinsky, EFFECTS OF A LONG-TERM TRANSFUSION REGIMEN ON SICKLE CELL-RELATED ILLNESSES, The Journal of pediatrics, 125(6), 1994, pp. 909-911
The efficacy of a long-term transfusion regimen in preventing sickle c
ell disease complications is unknown. We examined 17 patients before,
during, and after transfusion for cerebral vascular accident and vaso-
occlusive crisis. Total hospitalization rate, as well as admissions fo
r vasa-occlusive crisis, cases of acute chest syndrome, and bacterial
infections decreased while patients were on a transfusion regimen.
