The spontaneous aggregation of the bolaamphiphile alpha,omega-docosane
diol into embryonic three-dimensional crystallites at the air-water in
terface can be inhibited by additives. A study with the aim of determi
ning the necessary properties of such supplements is reported, which u
ses additives with molecular recognition properties and methods such a
s X-ray reflectivity, cryo-transmission electron microscopy, and atomi
c force microscopy in order to detect structural changes at the nanome
ter level.
