Abstract
Conjugated polyenes of different chain length have been doped with pot assium in a suitable cell which allows the recording of the doping-ind uced vibrational spectrum in an oxygen-free environment. The frequenci es of the doping-induced IR bands show dispersion with chain length. F rom these data, it follows that the dimension of the charge carrier in trans-polyacetylene must be larger than approximately 20 C = C double bonds.
