Ka. Welsh et al., ISSUES AFFECTING MINORITY PARTICIPATION IN RESEARCH STUDIES OF ALZHEIMER-DISEASE, Alzheimer disease and associated disorders, 8, 1994, pp. 38-48
Despite the need for minority subjects in research studies of Alzheime
r disease (AD), the successful involvement of minority patients in suc
h studies has been difficult. This report discusses the many societal,
economic, logistical, and attitudinal barriers that have inhibited th
e participation of minority patients and their families in medical res
earch programs of AD. Special consideration is given to the unique cul
tural issues that arise when conducting studies involving African-Amer
ican elderly subjects. Methods are considered for overcoming the barri
ers to participation gleaned from the national study CERAD (Consortium
to Establish a Registry of Alzheimer Disease) and other investigation
s of AD. Recommendations are made for future research programs targete
d on the specific health care needs and concerns of the minority segme
nts of our population.
