Al, Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Si, and Ti were determined in a series of N
ational Institute of Standards and Technology aluminum and manganese o
re and U.S. Geological Survey manganese nodules using both inductively
coupled plasma (ICP) spectroscopy and laser-induced breakdown spectro
scopy. The two methods of analysis will be compared and contrasted as
to sample preparation, difficulty of analysis, cost of instrumentation
, and values obtained for the analysis of standard reference materials
