A new type of electrical machine is considered. Operation of these mac
hines is based on the hysteresis phenomenon in bulk high-temperature s
uperconductors. Theory and calculated results of electromagnetic proce
sses and parameters of these machines for generater and motor operatio
n are given. The influence of the cooling conditions of the supercondu
cting rotor on the machine parameters is evaluated. Experimental resul
ts and the design of a nitrogen-cooled superconducting motor are descr
ibed. Comparative analysis of superconducting motor performance with t
hat for electrical motors of traditional design has been carried out.
Possible application of these machines in aeronautical and other equip
ment is discussed.
