Abstract
The recent identification and purification of anandamide (arachidonyl ethanol-amide) (ANA), the putative endogenous ligand for the cannabino id receptor provided us the chance to investigate its effects on pitui tary hormone secretion. We compared the effects of Delta(9)-tetrahydro cannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive component of the marihuana wit h ANA after chronic i.p. administration in adult male rats. Both drugs altered serum levels of luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hor mone, prolactin and growth hormone. Their effects seemed to be mainly inhibitory.
