A rigorous proof of the uniqueness of Chen's solution for the inverse
blackbody radiation problem is given. The proof depends on the asympto
tic behavior of the area temperature distribution a(T), especially on
the sufficient condition that a(T) approaches zero faster than T-2 in
the high temperature limit. The method is also applicable to a variety
of Fredholm integral equations of the first kind, including the speci
fic heat-phonon spectrum inversion problem.
