Abstract
Pollen data reported from the two measuring stations of Locarno-Monti (southern slope of the Alps) and of Zurich (northern slope of the Alps ) concerning the years 1989-1993 were compared with meteo data from th e corresponding locations. Thereby it was stated that the registered q uantity of allergenic pollen south of the Alps is higher by a factor o f 1.6 than north of the Alps. These differences are due to the distinc tly milder climate in the canton of Ticino (south of the Alps) showing higher annual mean temperatures, more important sunshine duration and less precipitation days. The stronger concentration of allergenic pol len in the Ticino might be a reason for the higher frequency of pollin osis on the southern slope of the Alps.
