Aeromonas species have been increasingly recognized as causes of clini
cal diseases, usually gastroenteritis or soft tissue infections. The s
ource for soft tissue infections is typically environmental contaminat
ion of a traumatic wound. We report a fulminant Aeromonas soft tissue
infection acquired from soil exposure in a woman with alcoholic cirrho
sis of the liver. She had no apparent skin disruption. This infection
resulted in sepsis and death despite appropriate surgical and antibiot
ic therapy.
