Suppurative thyroiditis is a rare condition, most often arising from u
nderlying abnormal anatomy. The most common organisms isolated from pa
tients with suppurative thyroiditis are Staphylococcus aureus, Strepto
coccus pyogenes, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Streptococcus pneumon
iae. Antimicrobial therapy results in eradication of the organism.
