Abstract
A theory of interaction between a Gaussian beam described by a first-o rder Davis approximation and an infinite cylinder, introducing scalar potentials that are not linear combinations of separable potentials, i s discussed. The theory exhibits unexpected difficulties, forming a ch allenge that should attract the attention of other researchers.
