AN OVERVIEW OF RESPIRATORY MUSCLE FUNCTION

This article reviews the important features of respiratory muscle stru cture and function, including fiber types, fatigue, work and efficienc y of breathing, neural connections, circulation, and mechanical proper ties. Emphasis is placed on the functional anatomy and the coordinatio n and interaction of respiratory muscle action. Normal function is con trasted with the respiratory muscle dysfunction seen in patients with neuromuscular disease.
