The use of furan rings as participants in anodic olefin coupling react
ions have been studied. The reactions were found to be compatible with
the formation of six-, seven-, and eight-membered rings, as well as t
he use of enol ether, allylsilane, styrene, and simple alkyl olefin co
upling partners. The ability of the reactions to form seven-membered r
ings in methanol solvent indicated that furan rings are among the best
anodic olefin coupling participants studied to date.
