We describe the application of the sacrificial anode process to the ac
tivation of bromotrifluoromethane, using various metals as anode. The
method provides the trifluoromethylation of carbonyl compounds, SO2, D
MF and organic halides in yields almost as good as classical organic p
rocedures, and in milder conditions. The nature of both the anode and
the metallic ions which arise from it play a paramount role either in
the formation/non-formation of trifluoromethyl organometallic intermed
iates, or by modulating their basicity and reactivity.
