Conventional, multi-cylinder drying of paper may be supplemented with
nerv techniques such as infrared, gas-fired conduction and impingement
drying, to increase production capacity or to convert machines to pro
duce higher value added grades. Application of new techniques requires
the ability to predict changes in sheet moisture in dryers. We have d
eveloped a computer simulation of drying paper by several techniques.
The model is demonstrated by simulation of the effect of steam pressur
e on three machines with cylinder dryers, and for a machine making lig
htweight coated paper using a combination of cylinder, infrared and im
pingement drying.
