We show that a first category homogeneous zero-dimensional Borel set X
can be embedded in P(omega) as an ideal on omega if and only if X is
homeomorphic to X x X if and only if X is Wadge-equivalent to X x X. F
urthermore, we determine the Wadge classes of such X, thus giving a co
mplete picture of the possible descriptive complexity of Borel ideals
on omega. We also discuss the connection with ideals of compact sets.
