The thermal decomposition of Cu-II, Co-II, Ni-II, Mn-II, Fe-III, and C
r-III methacryloylacetonates has been compared with the thermal behavi
or of the corresponding acetylacetonates and poly(methacryloylacetonat
es). Dehydration and thermal polymerization of methacryloylacetonates
occur at 110-160 degrees C. The results of the thermolysis conform wit
h the Irving-Williams sequence for the stability of the complexes of b
ivalent transition metals. Thermal destruction of metallopolymers diff
ers from that of low-molecular analogs. The temperature of complete de
composition of the compounds studied correlates with the number of ele
ctrons in the d-orbital of the metal.
