In plastic material analysis HPLC and GC can be used for residue analy
sis as well as for quality control. Both chromatographic methods are d
istinguished by their sensitivity. Gas chromatography is employed if t
he compounds to be determined can be transported by a gas without prob
lems. HPLC is used for analysis of compounds in solution. In the follo
wing we will present two plastic material applications. Moreover, the
respective sample pretreatment and the analysis method will be shown.
The first application is the analysis of plasticizers (phthalic acid e
sters) by HPLC as well as by GC. The second example is the determinati
on of solvents like pentane in polypropylene and polyethylene plastic
films by the GC headspace method.
