The Centers for Epidemiology and Animal Health (USDA:APhis:VS) in the
United States conducted a survey recently of the data relating to the
present epidemic of bovine spongiform encephatopathy (BSE). The findin
gs indicate that the measures adopted since 1988 in Great Britain, whe
re over 99% of the laboratory-confirmed cases have been reported, are
having an effect. The US report confirms that the measures adopted by
the Irish authorities from the outset were wholly justifiable on epide
miological and economic grounds. The following is a summary of the US
findings as published in the report entitled 'Bovine Spongiform Enceph
alopathy: Implications for the United States' (July 1993).
