The interpretation of the Sandelin phenomenon, leading to overthicknes
ses of the coating when galvanizing silicon steel, is due to the react
ivity of the substrate in the molten zinc. By zinc vapour phase deposi
tion, this phenomenon disappears. In fact, during the zinc vapour-subs
trate reaction, the first intermetallic compound which forms has a gre
ater silicon content than that in the zeta-compound, which precipitate
s the first during the classical galvanizing process.
