A sediment profile containing charcoal fragments was discovered in a s
wampy area in the region of central Brazil; the sequence includes most
of the Holocene and testifies to the existence of a period of signifi
cant wildfires during the Middle Holocene. These fires, at the origin
of today's savanna, took place during the beginning of a dry climatic
period around 6,000 BP. The recovery of the partly-deciduous mesophilo
us forest takes place around 3,000 BP. Modern deforestation began afte
r 600 BP.
