Hypoglossum subsimplex sp. nov. is described from the Florida Keys, Gu
lf of Mexico, which raises the total to 8 species of Hypoglossum occur
ring in the western tropical and subtropical Atlantic. Distinctive cha
racteristics of the new species include its very small size (to 6 mm i
n height), its usually simple or sub-simple blades, its long, continuo
us tetrasporangial sori, the restriction of the tetrasporangia to the
primary layer, and the absence of a corticated midrib.
