During the summer of 1993 large areas of clear water have persisted fo
r months in the turbid shallow lakes Wolderwijd and Veluwemeer (Nether
lands). The areas coincide with submerged plant stands dominated by Ch
ara contraria A. Braun ex Kutzing. These observations show that the tw
o contrasting states that have been described as alternative equilibri
a for shallow lakes, a turbid state and a clear vegetation dominated o
ne, can actually coexist within a lake.
