Abstract
The Caribbean sponge Agelas longissima produces large amounts of R)-2- hydroxytetracosylamido]-1,3,4-hexadecanetriol (longiside, 1), a glycos phingolipid with an unprecedented carbohydrate moiety containing a gal actose unit in the unusual beta-furanose form. The structure of longis ide was determined by spectroscopic analysis and chemical degradation.
