The incoherent inelastic neutron scattering study in a KHCO3 single cr
ystal is reported. KHCO3 crystal contains (HCO3)(2) dimers linked by h
ydrogen-bonds. Neutron scattering experiments were done in order to st
udy the hydrogen motions in the dimer. Two OH bending modes were detec
ted, with polarizations one in the dimer plane and the other out of th
is plane. The obtained results were analyzed by comparing with recent
infrared, Raman and powder neutron scattering data. The angular depend
ence of the neutron scattering spectra was found to be very useful to
identify the hydrogen modes in crystalline slates.
