Callus and suspension cultures of the liverwort, Heteroscyphus planus
accumulated novel diterpenoid acids of the clerodane-type, namely, (12
Z)-5,10-trans-cleroda-3,12,14-trien-20-oic acid (heteroscyphic acid A)
, -6-acetoxy-5,10-trans-cleroda-3,12,14-trien-20-oic acid (heteroscyph
ic acid B) and (12Z)-3,4-epoxy-6-acetoxy-5,10-trans-cleroda-12, 14-die
n-20-oic acid (heteroscyphic acid C). Their structures and relative st
ereochemistry were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic evidence t
ogether with chemical transformation.
