The crystal structure of indium berate, InBO3, has been determined by
single-crystal X-ray methods. The structure is similar to that of the
mineral calcite, CaCO3. Layers of distorted InO6 octahedra are interle
aved by layers of triangular-planar BO3 units. The resulting indium-ce
ntered O octahedron exhibits a small trigonal elongation. The structur
e is compared and contrasted with other berates containing indium.
