(R,S)-1-PHENYLETHYLAMMONIUM (S)-MANDELATE

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C8H12N+. C8H7O3-, contains two 1-phenylethylammonium cations with opposite configurations and two (S)-mandelate anions (alpha-hydroxybenzeneacetate). The ions are show n to be nearly related by a pseudo inversion centre. This gives rise t o an unusual conformation of one of the (S)-mandelate ions. An extensi ve hydrogen-bond system connects the ions in a similar way to the hydr ogen-bond patterns found in (S)-1-phenylethylammonium (S)-mandelate an d (R)-mandelate.
